Dr. Leusden now an active provider for Denver Options, INC

I am pleased to announce an active provider status for Denver Options, INC in association with the Traumatic Brain Injury Trust Fund Program.

In private practice, I have seen clients who have experienced traumatic brain injury and have been able to facilitate a significant change with DNFT® chiropractic. Not only are the cranial bones, their articulations, and associated dural connections able to be effectively addressed with this work, associated injuries and trauma elsewhere is able to specifically analysed and addressed.

Beneficiaries to the generous Traumatic Brain Injury Trust Fund, with Care Coordinator approval, are able to receive an initial service of care in my office. This includes an initial visit and depending on the condition and patient situation, 2-5 follow up visits.

The initial series of care is unique due to the progressive nature of my work. Due to the specific analysis and complete corrections possible with this work, each visit is able to pick up where previous visits leave off. Adjustments are made with light force impulses without popping or cracking sounds and are done at specific time in a specific sequence. The body, when analysed and adjusted this way prefers to be in a corrected state. It is more efficient and stable corrected, hence the resulting holding ability.

Many times, Traumatic Brain Injury has associated injury to the upper cervical spine, thoracic spine ,and sometimes indirectly, the lower back. The initial series of care offers an opportunity to have a clean slate effect on accumulated injury and trauma. 2-5 visits in my office can produce a stable, clean slate spine and body. Feel free to contact me at drleusden@gmail.com for details or to see if your situation qualifies.

Dr. Leusden (Colorado Springs) on Resolving Apprehension to Chiropractic Care

The social perception around chiropractic is admittedly not positive. Many people I see as new clients have had a poor experience with traditional chiropractic care or have applied what they heard about traditional chiropractic care to the entire profession. This is unfortunate because this negative perception can prevent people who could benefit from specialized chiropractic care. The chiropractic profession is interesting in part, because there are so many different approaches. As such, prospective patients/clients should be aware of the choices available and chose a chiropractor according to their specific needs and concerns.

These fundamental aspects of my office are important to consider:

● We are able to use the client’s body as its own instrument to find exactly where and what details are actively causing stress on the nervous system.

● Correcting and resolving these findings is achieved with light force impulses without any popping (joint cavitation), or sudden movements. The client is at rest and relaxed during the treatment session.

● Each visit is progressive in nature. The body is more efficient and stable after we find and resolve stored stress patterns which means the adjustments hold for a relatively very long time. This allows us to pick up where we left off on follow up visits.

● It is currently taking 3-5 visits initially in 5-8 weeks to analyze and resolve the patterns of accumulated life stress we store, layer and carry with us. These patterns are what cause the symptoms which make people first consider chiropractic care.

● Know we are able to identify the exact language or code of how your body stores and accumulates stress and through this process, we are able to resolve these findings.

● A reasonable maintenance schedule is recommended based on the finding and how well a client is holding the adjustments. typically, the maintenance visit schedule ranges from two times a year to monthly or as needed depending on the client’s unique situation.

● I only want people to see me if they are benefiting from the care provided. Usually clients know if this process is working for them after the first visit.

There are some articles on this site, some more technical than others, which detail the exact nature and process this unique work offers. This podcast is a great introduction, so is this article: Fewer visits, Lasting Corrections.

Health and happiness to all,

Reducing Inflammation: BodBeat Episode 13

Reprinted with permission of Bodbeat.com

Written by Dr. Loretta

While there is a tendency to consider the inflammatory response as a reaction that is harmful to the body, a more balanced view is that it is actually a protective and restorative response.

I explain to my patients that inflammation stops them from doing the very movement that causes pain or injury. The splinting or spasming they feel in adjacent muscles is a signal to STOP, the muscle are actually protecting the deeper structures ( discs, ligaments, and tendons) from further injury.

The healing process is very complex and involves more than just an inflammatory response.  Tissue that has been injured must be repaired.  It is well established that nutrients can be rate-limiting factors for tissue repair and wound healing.  For example, vitamin C deficiencies have been directly linked to slow wound healing.

THE INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE

The classic signs of inflammation are local redness, swelling, heat, pain, and loss of function.  The events of inflammation that underlie these manifestations are induced and regulated by a large number of chemical mediators, including eicosanoids, kinins, complement proteins, histamines, and monokines.  Some forms of anti-inflammatory therapy involve regulating the production of some of these chemical mediators.  For instance, the regulation of eicosanoids synthesis is a classic mechanism for controlling inflammation

Eicosanoids

Eicosanoids are short-live, hormone-like substances present in tissues throughout the body.  They function as mediators of a variety of physiological responses such as inflammation, blood clotting, vascular dilation, and immunity.  Eicosanoids can be divided into four classes:

Prostaglandins

Leukotrienes

Thromboxanes

Prostacyclins

Beyond ibuprofen.  Natural ways to reduce inflammation

There  are a number of herbal remedies that have been reported to help reduce inflammation when you have an injury.

The number of chemical compounds, called phytochemicals, found within the plant kingdom is truly vast and some of the phytochemicals found in certain herbs and plants are reported to demonstrate pain and inflammation-reducing properties.  Like aspirin, many are presumed to work by blocking the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways and possibly by other mechanisms as well.  Bioflavonoids are a broader class of phytochemicals found largely in citrus fruits, tea, and wine.  Research suggests that bioflavonoids, such as quercetin, may reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, and phospholipase.

Ginger and Tumeric

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa), two very popular herbs used within the East Indian system of medicine (Ayurveda), have long been used in folk medicine for a variety of both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions such as sprains and arthritis.  Numerous animal and in vitro studies have demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities for both ginger and turmeric.  These studies suggest that both herbs may block cyclo-oxygenase and lipoxygenase activity, thereby inhibiting prostaglandin and leukotriene release.  In addition, turmeric may inhibit the release of histamine.

The anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin, the principal compound found in turmeric, were studied in a double-blind clinical trial of 49 patients with rheumatoid arthritis.Significant improvement was seen, with relief of morning stiffness and joint swelling

Cayenne Pepper
Another compound structurally related to those found in ginger and turmeric is capsaicin, the main constituent of cayenne pepper (Capsicum annuum).  Capsaicin may play a role in inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis by blocking cyclooxygenase activity.  In addition, cayenne pepper has been shown to possess powerful antioxidant compounds, reduce platelet aggregation, and improve blood circulation, and thus may play a role in reducing inflammation.

Boswellia
Boswellia gum resin, derived from the Boswellia serrata tree, is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy that is used for a variety of inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and cervical spondylitis.  Boswellic acids have also been shown in vitro to inhibit the complement system, a set of enzymes that work with antibodies to attack foreign cells and bacteria.  Pathologically prolonged and sustained activation of the complement system is implicated in a variety of inflammatory disorders.

Boswellic acids have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity in a variety of animal experimental models as well as human studies.  Unlike traditional NSAIDs, Boswellia extract appears to exhibit no significant side effects or toxicity.

PROTEOLYTIC ENZYMES

A great deal of the research that describes an anti-inflammatory effect of proteolytic enzymes centers around acute (e.g., sports) injuries, although post-surgery and degenerative joint conditions have been studied as well.  In most cases, the patients that received the enzymes demonstrated significant reductions in pain and inflammation and faster recovery rates compared to the placebo groups (the duration of healing was reduced by half in some instances).

*The anti-inflammatory activity of proteolytic enzymes is believed to be, in part, the result of eicosanoid modulation.  Animal studies suggest that oral proteases may inhibit the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.

Supplemental proteolytic enzymes are derived from plant and animal sources.  Common proteases include bromelain from pineapple; papain and chymopapain from papaya; the fungal protease from the Aspergillus oryzae fungi; and trypsin, chymotrypsin, and pancreatin usually from porcine (pig) or bovine (cow) origins.  However, porcine sources yield higher specific activity than do bovine sources.

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

Homeopathic remedies for pain and inflammation have been around for over 100 years.  Believed to provide an “energetic” stimulus to the natural healing qualities of the body, homeopathic remedies are reported to be highly effective and at the same time quite innocuous.  Traditionally, they have been used for both acute and chronic injuries.  The growing interest in alternative medicine and the numerous anecdotal reports of homeopathy’s effectiveness have led to an increase in the number of clinical trials performed.  While these trials  may not provide scientific explanations as to how homeopathy works, many do support their use.

INFLAMMATION INCREASES FREE RADICAL DAMAGE

A direct result of inflammation is an increase in free radical reaction with the polyunsaturated fatty acids of cell membranes leading to the eventual destruction of the cell.  One single free radical can destroy an entire membrane through a self-propagating chain reaction.  The body defends itself against free radical damage with an integrated antioxidant defense system that utilizes antioxidants produced naturally within the body and from antioxidants found within foods.  During inflammation, the need for a variety of antioxidant nutrients may be increased.

Vitamin E, which is an important membrane antioxidant, provides chain-breaking free radical protection.

It may be especially important to include vitamin E with routine essential fatty acid supplementation since fatty acids are readily oxidized.  It has been suggested that long-term fish oil supplementation, for example, may increase lipid peroxidation and compromise vitamin E status.

CONCLUSION

Basically, the idea is to shift the balance of eicosanoid synthesis toward anti-inflammatory mediators and away from pro-inflammatory mediators.  Furthermore, it has been suggested that a healthful balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids leads to better overall health and may help reduce the risk of several common diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, and cancer.

For acute pain and inflammation, a more natural method for inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways (the mechanism behind NSAIDs) is with herbal support such as ginger, turmeric, and Boswellia, and with bioflavonoids.  In addition, homeopathic remedies and proteolytic enzymes are widely used as part of a comprehensive holistic approach to managing pain and inflammation.

How to Heal: Addressing Thoughts, Trauma, and Toxins

One of the most sought after pursuits in the modern day, has a solution close to home. The healing process is happening at some level at all times. It is simply the function of our physiology: to breakdown and rebuild. Every moment, everyday, the healing process is alive.

If the true nature of our physiology is to heal, how are we sick, why do we struggle with health concerns?

It is true: our mental state can have have a significant roll in how we look and feel. We all understand anorexia and bulimia for example and the struggle with perceived beauty. It is easier said than done but if those suffering with these conditions changed their thought stream, the repeating record, this condition dissolves away. Replacing the thought stream with appreciates, humility, self confidence and true self love, would allow for dramatic changes in the anorexia and bulimia case.

We could all benefit from simply letting the thoughts holding us back pass. In turn, establishing a new habit: taking time to appreciate challenges as opportunities, to forgive those who have wronged us, and to love Love. Dramatic health changes are only brought about with moving beyond our self imposed limitations and allowing our potential to manifest. Know you can heal. Know healing is your nature and give your self the opportunity.

Toxicity can also come in the form of seed thoughts from passing comments, criticisms, declared limitations, a song’s lyrics, and certain sound and visual input. Eliminating toxic thoughts is as simple as forgiving whom ever planted those seeds for their ignorance, sending them compassion from your Heart, and replacing the limitation with experiencing and knowing dramatic healing.

Start listening to classical music exclusively. Give it a try for a week.

Toxic substances and chemicals are everywhere. It is difficult to avoid environmentally although knowing your body has the mechanisms to reduce and eliminate this exposure prevents us from being victims. Eating hormone free meat, dairy products, and organic fruits and vegetables goes a long way in reducing your exposure and actually facilitates your body eliminating the toxic burden.

Start giving our body exactly what it needs to detoxify and rebuild with ideal nutrition found in live and raw fruits and green leaves. Be creative and enjoy… try these Green Drinks for a week. It is easier than you think!

Stress in all forms can accumulate in the tissues of the body in a now identifiable and predictable language. Chiropractors has over over a century worked with what they call the subluxation. You body is a master at compensating and reducing the impact of significant trauma, repetitive postures and motions recorded as the subluxation. Overtime, this stress burden can become distracting for our sub-conscious and conscious awareness of self. It is as if you have 20 software programs running on a computer with 1 Gig of RAM (if a computer analogy works). Another example: trying to compose a love poem in a heavy metal concert mosh pit. Eliminating this stress burden is possible and allows your body’s energy to be redirected to repair, detoxification, and rebuilding.

Addressing these three elements: Thoughts, Toxicity, and stored Stress allows our healing potential to manifest.

Our bodies are a Temple of unimaginable complexity and ever-present dramatic potential. No other time than now and no one else but you….

Most importantly, helping ourselves helps everyone.

Fewer visits. Lasting corrections.

The Language of Stress Accumulation has predictable elements. Once identified, these patterns, their compensations and underlying primary patterns can be resolved with light force impulses in specific directions. The result is a more stable, efficient system which prefers to be in the newly allowed state. Accessing this language of stress accumulation, it’s elements, factors and contributing factors requires communication with the body’s self-perception indicator. My preferred method is using a reflex taught today through D.N.F.T.® Seminars.

Once this communication is established, the language of stress accumulation is revealed to the careful and meticulous observer. When the body can be used as an instrument for identifying how stress is accumulated and then monitoring how well the adjustments are holding, one can then begin to quantify the treatment course with relative accuracy.

The analysis detail and efficient long lasting corrections available today have allowed my current practice and patient expectations to be relatively very high. Over years of applying a detailed and focused analysis and striving for complete subluxation correction, these elements can now be reasonably met:

1) Identification of compensation patterns applied by the subject’s body out of self preservation to reduce the effect of an underlying primary stress accumulation.

2) To reduce the above compensation and reveal a single primary (sometimes two vertebral levels at the same time) vertebral level actively causing stress to the subject’s body.

3) To identify the exact combination of directions and all associated soft tissue aspects involved with the primary subluxation or stress accumulation pattern.

4) To respectfully and completely eliminate the stress pattern expressed in 3).

5) To observe and address spontaneous and assisted retracing of stored primary stress patterns after 4).

When the above operations are followed through, the number of visits required to significantly reduce the overall subluxation burden can be predicted over time. The current initial course of treatment expected at my office is an initial visit and two follow up visits within three to five weeks. Each visit should ideally pick up where the visit before leaves off. This allows for progressive expectations with a defined and reasonable initial treatment trial. These treatment expectations effectively resolves new patient anxiety and reservation about coming to a chiropractor in the first place. This approach also resolves apprehension and resistance people have in referring others to your office. Fewer visits and lasting corrections are top selling points when people talk to their friends and families about the care provided at an office like this. Add the point there is no cavitation, popping or cracking during the adjustment and most fears the general population has to coming to a chiropractor are eliminated.

Factors such as age, overall physical trauma history, overuse factors emotional burdens and dietary habits are all relevant when considering the overall subluxation burden. Regarding specific and pure chiropractic, identifying and eliminating how the stress of life is stored is the top priority. When this stress accumulation is identified completely it is possible to essentially “clear the slate” of the stored past stress allowing more system wide efficiency and stability. When some one’s body is cleared of the subluxation burden, the energy it was spending on compensating and accommodating for that stress is redirected towards healing, repair and regrowth.

Chiropractic’s value is obvious to those who have experienced its capabilities first hand. Removing the resistance and misconceptions commonplace in the general society’s perception toward chiropractic will allow the profession’s true value to emerge and develop into the potential it deserves.

Me toxic?

Reprinted with permission of Dr. Jennah Dieter, D.C., C.A.C.C.P

Me Toxic? Could Toxins be Ruining Your Health?

We are meant to be Healthy!
Most people find that as they get older, things start to break down. Perhaps they gain weight or have high cholesterol levels for the first time in their lives. Or, they begin to have migraines, digestive problems, insomnia, or aches and pains. They may feel as though they are aging quicker. Sound familiar?

You could be Toxic.
Every part of our digestion and metabolism was designed to keep us active for a full, long life. Our bodies are incredibly designed with self-healing processes, provided we take care of them. If we are not healthy, somewhere along the way we have interfered with our body’s normal process of healing. Waiting until we have physical symptoms before we think about following a healthy lifestyle is often too late. Learning how to prevent disease is far better than trying to cure it!

We are all exposed to thousands of toxins and chemicals on a daily basis at work, in the home, through the air we breathe, our food and water supply, and through the use of legal and illegal drugs. In addition, we are eating more sugar and processed foods than ever before and regularly abuse our bodies with various stimulants and sedatives. Unfortunately, one of the most common ways to become toxic is through our American diet! The fast-food American diet of high fat, sugar & salt does not give our bodies enough nutrients to maintain proper health and hinders our normal internal cleansing abilities.

Common Signs of Toxicity:
Fatigue and low energy
Food Cravings
Weight gain
Indigestion or reflux
Dark circles under eyes
PMS
Gas & Bloating
Frequent headaches
Difficulty sleeping
Joint pain
Mentally dull
Hypoglycemia
Allergies
High cholesterol
Skin problems
High blood pressure
Low libido
Fibromyalgia
Constipation
Mood swings

How Toxins Rob our Health.
When we continue year after year, to demand that our body handle an overload of toxins that it was not designed to handle. Sooner or later symptoms of disease appear. The body’s inability to handle toxins may be the determining factor in most diseases. The better your body can eliminate toxins, the more likely you will be healthy.

How do you know if you are toxic?
Your body is giving you the answers all the time but we typically ignore the signs. Check the list below. If you answer yes to many of the questions, then it is likely that your diet significantly increases your toxic load.

Do you…
Drink Tap Water?
Drink Coffee, soda, Beer, Wine or Alcoholic Drinks?
Use Artificial Sweeteners?
Eat Fast Foods?
Eat French Fries or other Fried Foods?
Eat Chips or Corn Chips?
Eat Cookies, Candy, Cake and Ice Cream?
Eat foods that contain ingredients you can’t pronounce
Eat Commercial Meat & Chicken instead of Organic/Local
Eat Commercial Vegetables & Fruits instead of Organic/Local

So you’re toxic. What can you do?
Cleanse your body from the inside out! Internal cleansing helps every part of your body heal. More importantly, cleansing helps you shift gears and go from an unhealthy to a healthy lifestyle. Internal cleansing is one of the most powerful natural healing therapies there is. Cleansing helps us correct damage done to us by our diet and lifestyle.

Benefits of Cleansing
Improved digestion and elimination
Increased energy
Improved and easier weight loss
Stronger immune system
Improve physical appearance
Normal appetite
Decreased cravings & additions
Improved circulation
Improved sleep
Clearer skin

…And these are just a few!

What type of cleansing is right for me?
Many types of cleansing products are available over the counter, but not all are safe or natural, and most products render minimal results, especially when diet is not addressed. The best type of cleanse is a nutritive cleanse which allows you to eat local, organic vegetables, protein, and clean, filtered water, while also providing you with whole food and/or herbal supplementation to support the organs of detoxification. Drastic fasts which restrict eating can be dangerous. Going it alone during a cleansing program is not recommended and could even be dangerous if there are any contraindications in your case. This article is not intended to treat any disease or dysfunction; consultation with a doctor is recommended.

How to Eat your Weight in Raw, Live Foods

Over the past two years I have realized the easiest way to feed the family a massive amount of vegetables and fruits is the Green Drink. Once someone knows how to prepare this highly digestible live food, it easily becomes a morning routine the entire family can benefit from and enjoy.

Since we have been making these Green Drinks for the last two years, I noticed considerable positive changes in these areas of our family’s health:

-Our skin looks better: more balanced and seems to glow from the inside
-Our breath smells clean
-Regular and complete elimination
-Mental state is consistently more clear and balanced
-Our immune systems seem consistently stronger

The idea is simple: eating live foods is beneficial because the vital properties of the food are passed to our own nutrition starved bodies. Higher quality nutrient intake equals better health benefit. If we make it easy to digest live and vital foods (which these green drinks ideally provide), it allows our bodies to process and utilize the vital nature of the foods we consume in the easiest most efficient manner.

It is this simple:

Using a blender, preferably a Vita-mix blender (or a comparably powerful masticating machine), add a quart of purified water to three cored apples. Two oranges, or a mango, or two pears, or two cups of frozen berries will also work for the purpose of establishing a Green Drink base.

When the above fruits are combined with greens, the taste is dominantly sweet and enjoyable enough for children to enjoy. This also allows husbands, teenagers, skeptical family and friends to actually enjoy the drink. Using a powerful blender helps with the texture making it smooth and easy to drink.

What ever you add to the base will taste amazingly vital and nutritious and will certainly satisfy beyond your expectations. Examples:

Add half a bunch of parsley ($1.50 a bunch),

half a bunch of cilantro (~$2.00 bunch),

half a bunch of kale (~$2.00 bunch) to the above base and blend on high for thirty seconds

Feel free to experiment with these other green options.

Drink with great appreciation for being able to provide your body, mind and soul with ideal nutrition. Repeat as many days a week as you can and know the more you drink and better your will look, feel and the happier you will be.
